As someone commented below the article on the guardian, I'm pretty sure this story gets heavily exaggerated every time it's brought up. The "he was HAULED OFF" bit makes good reading but in reality it was just a tactical change with 5 mins left".

Apparently most fans didn't even know the situation until they were told to believe he was shit.
