I'd argue no to Arsenal as well, it's like saying West Ham as well cos they get loads more at a new stadium.

Leeds aren't actually well supported locally they picked up a load nationally in the 60/70s which has continued hence their impressive away numbers everywhere.

For me the top four would be United, Liverpool, Everton, Leeds then a n other from Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, City.

I think the above clubs wouldn't get the gates Leeds have over the last 13 years outside the PL.

Us and Derby have had nearly the same gates as Leeds over the last 13 years and even Brighton since their move.
Do you really think teams such as Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Man City, Chelsea, would only match our attendances if in the Championship.
That may have been true about some of them in the 80s, (when we often had larger crowds than Man City and Chelsea) but the game has moved on since then.

I do agree that Leeds have the potential to be amongst these clubs and have huge nationwide support, but without an input of money (like City and Chelsea) they currently can't compete with these clubs fan bases.

Away support another story they can compete with anybody other than the big 2.

Brighton's gates at the AMEX are incredibly impressive and the fans aren't going to go away any time soon. Really good club was glad they finally got up last season.

They have a massive catchment area and are on the crest of a wave, they aren't remotely a big club though.

I'm certain Derby have been getting good home gates since they were promoted, think thats about 10 years, (sure you will have details).
Either way all those other clubs would get larger home gates than Leeds if they were relegated.
Not knocking Leeds since the early 70s they have a huge fanbase, but nothing that can compare with those other clubs since the bollocks that is the PL, huge cash investments and overseas fans.
Sadly it's all about money.
Money attracts better players, which (usually) attracts success, which in turn attracts fans.
I would rather have between 20 and 25k Sheffielders or even bleeding Leeds supporting the team than have over a million fans worldwide (like Chelsea and City).
I would say both those clubs support is somewhat different now to 25 years ago and definetly not for the better.

So it is impressive to see Brighton average 30,000 and it wouldn’t surprise me if they keep that figure up whilst in the PL.

My view regards Bristol City and club size always revolves around the word “potential”.
Bristol like Leeds has a large population base, so if either club has success then expect gates to increase to impressive levels.
Obviously the city of Leeds has only 1 team and a bigger population base, so they do have potential to be massive, one of the biggest in England.

Leeds got knocked off their perch last season by us and Newcastle. First time ever I believe since they got relegated from the prem. I think they will sell out everywhere this season though. Home crowds are up, so away demand will be higher.

We've spent 50 years at this level, 5 more than D3 where we've spent 45 and Brighton have about 20/50 D2/D3 ratio and only 4 years in the top flight but given their current standing, stadium and attendances I'd say there's little in it really.

So you think that if Arsenal got relegated next season in the 2028/29 season they'd be averaging 20k home fans over the course of the season?

Football's changed, Arsenal are a huge brand in this country, as are City. More kids support big clubs than their local teams nowadays, there were more Liverpool fans at my school than City fans (admittedly I live in Gas territory, but it's about a 50/50 split now generally).

The crowds Leeds get don't reflect the size of the fanbase. With Newcastle it's the other way round. Anyone would think they have a bigger fanbase than everyone apart from united, and Liverpool, but they just turn up in numbers more. In history only United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Newcastle, and Everton have commanded huge crowds on a regular basis. Then you have clubs like Chelsea, Villa, Man City, Sunderland, with Wednesday, Leeds, and Wolves making up the best of the rest. West Ham have only started getting good crowds in the last 10 years.

Our home support has been fantastic this season, but obviously that is only because were doing well and lots of the 'fans' have come out of the woodwork.

Away support hasn't been as good. Don't get me wrong it's better than last year, but still some much needed improvement.

Talk of a 40-50k stadium by some of your fans. Very risky, because if it went tits up, and you ended back in the championship struggling, you would be back down to 22k. If you establish yourself in the prem then I think you could pull in 35k most games, and 40k for the big games. Let's be honest though, you are struggling to sell out home games even with how well you are doing, so maybe you should hold fire a bit.

The original plan was the build every stand like the North Bank, which would mean having the 5th or 6th biggest stadium in the country at the time (very similar to the Stadium of Light) and bigger than stadiums like Villa Park. Back when god was a lad and it was all terracing we were one of the best supported clubs in the country, even the world at one point. I don't think those days are coming back, but I think if we do reach Fosun's ambition, it would mean European football, and then I could see us selling 40k+.

I appreciate there are a lot of ifs and buts riding on that though.

Nowt wrong with ambition. Infact it's a breath of fresh air to hear a club like wolves saying things like that, instead of just worrying about staying up. Massive ask, but you never know.
