Good signing. Lots of baggage but proven goalscorer. Been training at various clubs for the last year or so I think?

Interesting. Isn't there still a possibility that he gets found guilty in his new trial and gets sent back to prison? Dunno, haven't been keeping up to speed with it.

Seems a bit risky given his retrial is scheduled for October.

Gamble, will be condemned by the public I guess and could be a lot of pressure put on ala Oldham when they tried to sign him.

Which is ridiculous. The original verdict was overturned and his conviction quashed, so as of this moment, he is a free and innocent man.

27 now so not too old. Could argue he's missed the prime years of his career, but at the same time if he had carried on scoring as he had done with no prison sentence he'd no doubt be playing at a higher level, may have even been in the Wales squad today.

If he remains fit I see no reason he won't be as good as last time.

I know but this is the British public and press involved!

There is probably zero risk for Chesterfield, who probably have an option of tearing the contract in October anyway. Good signing for Chesterfield and a good week to announce it.

Wouldn't touch him for the simple fact he's not played pro football for 5 years now. Even if he's been training with clubs he's going to be miles off the pace. Wouldn't of thought anyone would touch him until the retrial either.

Fantastic PR for Chesterfield, this. :ffs:

Guilty or not, not for me to say, but he's a scumbag nonetheless.

As others have said; currently not convicted of any crime nor does he have an unspent conviction. No issues and glad he's signed for a club rather than have the whole ordeal that Oldham had when it was discussed for ages in advance.

Let him seek gainful employment and then see what happens in October.

Seems a perfect match Club and player.

Personally I would not sign him as others have said he has not kicked a ball competitively for 5 years and it will be interesting to see how there commercial partners react.

It's terrible PR, regardless of whether he is found innocent or not. I suppose its not implausible he could score goals, Lee Hughes did after a few years in prison.

I'm surprised he's found a club before the impending retrial.

With the verdict looking likely to be 'not guilty', he's free to live his life after that - but he hasn't been completely cleared yet.

Agree that it's bad PR regardless of what happens in his re-trial.

Whatever your stance is morally, he currently has to be perceived to be innocent so there's no reason for clubs to not sign him. Risky move from Chesterfield though, but if he can score the goals they need for the first half of the season then I doubt they will see it like that, their reputation and respect as a club is left quite vulnerable though if Evans is found guilty again.

A free and innocent man.
A free and innocent man who awaits trial for rape.
A free and innocent man who last time he faced a jury for the crime he is accused of was convicted
A free and innocent man who spent several years orchestrating a harrassment campaign against his victim*
A free and innocent man who has never, at any point, shown any remorse for taking advantage of someone whose ability to consent was clearly compromised regardless of whether he is proven, beyond reasonable doubt in a court of law, to have committed rape.

* Victim/alleged victim idgaf. I believe her

Woah did not see that coming. Don't know what to think about this right now. Prevailing thought is 'hopefully he scores'

Hang on, I made no comment about his character or what he did or didn't do. I simply pointed out that as of this moment in the eyes of the law, he is not guilty of any crime(and the original verdict is irrelevant because it was quashed) and he is free to do as he pleases. I was simply pointing out that the inevitable witch hunt by the media and opposition fans is incorrect and that we should let the courts decide one and for all wether he is guilty of rape or not.
