One year deal with a year option and it sounds as though there's something in his Braintree contract so we're not sure whether we'll have to pay a nominal fee with him being under 24.

Indeed. The way we're building at the moment I'd be disappointed to finish outside of the top 10. Still a few short, but if Dan Butler re-signs (which, if he does, would be a huge boost for us), then our XI on paper is looking great.
