FF12 is when 1FF started to turn to shit. It went from gold with 7-10 to something else... it's the one where they really started (for some damn reason, after already pretty much perfecting the games) to change things for the worse. Fuck this remaster.

I think even if you don't agree that the game is anything short of excellent, the malaise started with Ten. You could even argue that the rotten roots were present in 8, punctuated by an anomalous return to form with IX. 1FF XII in many ways is a more traditional 1FF game than X. It brought back the navigable overworld and provided more options and complexity for combat and levelling than Ten's streamlined mechanics did. In many ways, 1FF's descent mirrors what happened to video games in general over that period, with an increased focus on 'spectacle' and obsession with new tech obscuring why people played these games in the first place.

The thing is, I love X. I'm not really fussed about whether it's a traditional 1FF experience or what not, I've never even really played any of the games prior to VII (though I do intend to properly get around to changing that at some point...). For all it does with regarding the streamlined mechanics or whatever, I still love it as an overall experience. I couldn't possibly see that game as being a negative point on the 1FF series, myself... Hell, I love it so much that I still intend on playing X-2 at some stage just to get more of it, despite the awful things I've heard.

Though yes, I agree on VIII as that game has a lot about it which I hate, and I can't bring myself to complete it. Two words: Junction and Draw. Ugh.

But the biggest thing XII did wrong for me, worse than anything they did with the combat (basically tried to go down a more MMO style route, even though I don't think it was as terrible as some say) was that it just did not create an interesting story or characters. I remember finding Balthier quite decent but the rest were bland as a brown paper bag. I don't remember anything about any of them. At least VIII and even XIII had me into it's story and characters.

FFXII is criminally under-rated. The story (once you get your head round it) is actually pretty good (it's basically a mixture of Game of Thrones and Star Wars) and most of the charcaters are interesting enough even if unfortunately Vaan and Penelo are totally redundant. Like Oaf, I thought the story was "meh" the first time round but I have matured in those ten (yes, TEN) years since and can now appreciate it for what it is and not some of the clichéd plot lines seen in other RPG's today.

The combat system works really well, too. The only real bad things were that the Espers were useless and Quickenings could be overpowered. The Zodiac job system is something I've been looking forward to play since hearing about the Japanese release.

Oh and Oaf, X-2 isn't as bad as some people say but it's the most cringey game you'll ever play. Ever. Ever.
