The Beatles- Sgt Pepper (1967)
Nominated by: Cheese and Biscuits, PaulHaddock
Arguably the biggest album from the biggest band ever, Sgt Pepper was released to huge critical acclaim, staying at the top of the albums chart for 27 weeks. It showed the Beatles' move away from their earlier pop and blues; it marked the beginnings of the concept album. It drew ideas from early psychedelia provided the basis for operatic and prog rock.
The title track and 'When I'm Sixty-Four' perfectly showcase the new direction, with the added use of varied, orchestral instrumentation. 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' also implies heavily of the increased drug use that influenced the songs.
Finally, 'A Day in the Life' is my favourite song off the album. This roller coaster of a song contains several great sections sandwiching the mental crescendos.
