For point 2 it’s actually the opposite. FFP is much stricter in league 1 and 2 than the championship because wages are restricted to a percentage of turnover. When you go up to the championship it doesn’t work in the same way - it’s based on a maximum permitted loss. No wage restriction at all. The championship is harder but you are allowed to have larger losses measured over a 3 season period, more capital investment from owners and the club gets more tv revenue. So it’s not preferable to make signings before promoted. Once promoted you can spend more money.

But with league one, the owners can put as much money as they want into the club to add to the turnover. We've done it recently here by issuing new shares worth around £14 million -

He's on loan at Wigan. If Sunderland bid he will ultimately go there. However, apparently they're not interested in buying on a permanent basis. Everton apparently wanting to free up cash so could happen, who knows.

You can get round it with Sponsorship as well can't you? Hence a lot of clubs owners sponsor their own clubs shirts/stands/stadiums like us with Synectics (Carol's company) or Sheffield Wednesday with Chansiri etc etc. FGR with Ecotricity

I believe so, yes. Our owners have done so much to increase our sponsorship/advertising revenue since they joined.

Your lot can’t comment seeing as you failed FFP up in the championship whilst we ended up relegated due to an owner with no club funding incentives.

From what I understand as well, our administration came at a time when tv funding stopped and no parachute payments were in place at the time we got relegated from the Prem and money invested in expanding Portman Road. Those relegated now have the luxury of parachute payments.

I think that’s true too. I’ve never seen so much time and effort put into gain sponsorship and advertising for the club (even when you forget the whole Ed Sheeran money)

We suffered the same financial hardships but didn't rob small businesses....*


As for falling FFP, it's a fucking joke of a rule, how can clubs splash 100s of millions and have ridiculous wage bills due to PL failure yet clubs can't fight back to stop the top league being a closed shop.

Yeah that’s true to be fair they can as like a donation to the club. They can’t put money in the club as a loan or a claim a debt against it. It’s money they have to give away like in the share issue/cash raise so unless the value of the club increases (which is what they are gambling on) then they won’t see that money again. It would also require the same level of investment every season to artificially inflate the numbers to stay within ffp. So if you don’t go up at what point do they cut their losses and get out? Do they raise 14m again season after season. That’s the risk isn’t it.

Everyone is trying to get around it for sure. Just look further up the pyramid with City and Etihad etc. The whole FFP thing is pointless the way it is. It just creates a bigger divide between the bigger clubs and the smaller ones. The big revenue clubs got there before FFP existed by spending.

There should be better due diligence on new owners and there should be personal guarantees so if they throw money at it the club doesn’t suffer further down the line when they don’t want to anymore.

Germany has the best model - part fan ownership, and if clubs make a sustained loss they get relegated. Im not sure on the specifics but pretty sure that’s the gist of it.

Parachute payments are also a joke.

I know we get criticised a lot for what happened to us because everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon but the majority of our debt was to our owner when in the premier league after he invested in the club. Directors loans etc. He wrote those debts off because he’d invested in the club.

It was the rogue owner after the prem years in Ken Anderson (a previously banned director) who took over to asset strip us … a bit like Bury who left us in admin and screwed us over. Refused to pay players, staff, suppliers etc who became creditors. He just wanted the land and car parks to sell and develop. Nothing the fans could do about it. And we enjoyed some amazing years in the Prem before that but that wasn’t really our undoing.
