Looks like Shay Given will be joining us for training - another strong step in our bid to build the world's oldest team.

So he already has two of them, one is due to sign and he's known to want Akinola. Makes you think.
Is he?

We also missed out on Bradley, too. Fylde gave him a three year deal and ended up paying more than double the transfer fee we were offering.

When that list came out, we all knew that was basically his wish list. At the time, we were just starting to talk to Nuneaton about Whitehouse who we eventually signed.

Is Whitehouse any good? Can't say that he showed any particular signs of being a league standard player when with us.

It was usually Woodyard plus Power/Knott/Wood/Whitehouse in CM, so he was in and out of the side all season. Chipped in with goals, though and seems to have a knack of picking up second balls in the penalty area.

Plays more like an attacking midfielder, but we played him in central midfield and he didn't look too comfortable at first but seemed to improve as the season went on. Bit difficult to judge really because he joined us in October and although Nuneaton are classed as FT, I doubt it would have been on the level like other FT teams like us, Tranmere, Wrexham etc.

Don't think we'll really get a true measure of him until this season.

Also he was cup-tied so that didn't help get a run of games too as he couldn't play in the fa cup.
Did score some important goals but did miss a sitter in the trophy semi 2nd leg at home to York, scored that in 89/90th minute we'd have been in the final, narrow margins...

Hopefully make a signing or two early this week.

Flitcroft says we're close. Have to say he comes across unbelievably well in his interviews.

We are expected to sign an experienced left back and a forward one was at Wimbledon and one at the Blades so no idea who!

An article in the Sunday Mirror claims we are on the verge of agreeing a 12 month loan deal for Aston Villa keeper Sarkic who is a 19 year old Montenegro youth international, can't say I have ever heard of him, but that is hardly surprising as I don't follow the fortunes of Aston Villa or Montenegro that closely.

Now that it's getting close to where footballers aren't getting paid and they are returning from Benidorm, I'd expect there to be a bit more activity in general over the coming two weeks

... or even Danny Rowe or Dan Bradley.

He's going to have a shock next season.

Is this the same League 2 that's one league above the conference? You're making it sound like a 3 step jump. Don't flatter yourselves.

Hasn't Andy cook scored something like 60 league goals in the last 3 years? Surely the more outlandish statement is yours SOC suggesting he's definitely NOT good enough.

And Rowe and Bradley are both quality as well. Rowe currently playing for Ipswich in the champ but neither would get near League 2 Luton Town's starting XI that's for sure...

Apart from Pelly Ruddock and Jonathan Smith on the transfer list, there are no players in our squad that got promoted with us from the Conference. Obviously Andre Gray and Cameron McGeehan have now gone onto bigger and better things, but the rest simply weren't good enough.

And I dare say the Conference is/was far weaker than when we got promoted from that level.

And? No-one at Lincoln is under the impression that our title winning squad would be good enough to mount a serious challenge at the top of League 2. Many have left already and by the start of play in August we'll probably only have about 8 still with us.

The point is the players you picked out are more than good enough for league 2 and would be great signings for any side at that level. Hopefully we can sign one of them to help us compete at the right end of the table.

One of those seasons was in the Conference North though, wasn't it? He did well at Barrow the season before, but Mellon preferred Stockton over him when it came to crunch time, didn't he? Because he goes missing and he's too wishy washy and misses chances. He's a good Conference striker when he is playing at the top of his game, but yes I completely stand by saying that he is not good enough for this division.

Is it a bit worrying that Cowley thinks Andy Cook is L2 standard, Imps?
Not especially. Only natural when someone scores as many as he does that you'd assume they'd make the step up. Cook's scored about 100 in 4 seasons (23 last season at Tranmere without even being what you'd call a regular under Mellon). From what the Tranmere lot were saying, Mellon dropped him because of fitness related issues and he can't keep his weight down.

People talk about Fylde's Danny Rowe as though he's the next best thing but those who have seen him play for a prolonged period of time i.e. Lincoln fans, wouldn't bet on him being a success in the FL because he didn't do the job in the Conference. Much like you'll know better about Cook than other supporters.

Correct one season was in NLN. Scoring goals is the most difficult part of the game and what you tend to find is if you can do it in one league you can certainly do it in the one above. Given the service of course which a player like Cook requires.

From what Tranmere fans say Mellon not starting him during the run was not down to ability. Plus he'd just come back from a lay off and Tranmere were putting 9 and 6 past sides.

I struggle to see how you think he wouldn't improve a lot of League 2 sides. What did your leading scorer finish on for example after Bogle left, 5?

That same twitter site with the Paul Mullin rumour also suggests we are signing Ben Purkiss from Vale. I see he is captain so I doubt that unless Vale don't want/need him?

I'd have taken pretty much anyone over Scott Vernon though, including Cook. I liked Cook for us too, I'm not just arguing for the sake of it. And yeah, you can say it wasn't down to ability as to why he got dropped at Tranmere, but if he isn't at peak fitness and if he is letting his missed chances get to him then you've got two reasons that strengthen my argument surely? From the little bit of Stockton I saw last season, I'd have had him here over Cook for sure.

We were in talks about a new contract but don't know if that materialised (we kind of had a retained list but half of it was in talks over a new contract rather than offered).

Was decent first season, woeful last season. Yates will be fit and sign so maybe something in it.

Rumours on our forums suggest the Sheffield United left back we are in talks with is Hussey and the Wimbledon striker is Tyrone Barnett.

Hussey be a decent signing, Barnett not so sure.

He wasn't dropped he was injured, broke his hand then couldn't get back in the team because Tranmere were thrashing everyone. Don't know about this missing chances business, think that accolade has to go to James Norwood.

Well he still got 23 goals last season and he only played about half of it so you must have seen some deadly strikers in your first season back in the league to suggest he's not good enough.

Clearly I know nothing about him and his goal scoring record is not great but he's been playing for Morecambe, hardly the most creative team in history.

He's only 22 and is free I guess so maybe worth a punt. Saw he scored a good goal at Orient last season but suspect he wasn't the only one.
