Klopps fault tonight. They were really there for the taking but we didn't bring any strikers on until 89 min. Instead of we lost. At Anfield though, still confident of a win.

Poor game.

Liverpool should have enough about them to progress at Anfield.

Agreed, they'll step it up and be all over them at Anfield, may get dicked again on the counter but I think we have more than enough firepower to progress.

No one to blame for that but ourselves. You look for a draw, even against a team that spends 90% of the time parking the bus at home, and you're open to a counter. We should still beat them next week, but Klopp waited too long to make the change, and it was the wrong one when he did. Annoyed.

come on mate. you can't talk about parking any vehicles when you lined up without a striker. the game was fairly even, you had more shots off target they had more corners, villarreal usually having more players ahead of the play than liverpool. being good at defending doesn't mean they parked the bus.

Klopp got it wrong tonight. I'd understand playing that defensive team against an attacking team but against another defensive team? Didn't work. Sturridge must be pissed off. Gives Villarreal the perfect incentive to just sit back now.

1 sneaky counter attack at Anfield and we've got to score 3. Which won't happen against this Villarreal team.

Good result for Villarreal, can see them scoring at Anfield as Liverpool will be forced to play a more open game. Hope they progress as it's never nice to see cheats prosper.

Denis Suarez looks a talent, lovely first touch for the goal.

And we shouldn't have played without strikers, I made that clear when I called for Sturridge to be introduced. But do you think we will be doing what Villarreal did tonight next week at home? Even had it finished 0-0? Of course not.

Our style tonight, even though it didn't work, was what a lot of teams do in Europe, Benitez was an expert at it. They were at home and played like an away team. They got their goal but I don't think it will be enough, we should still progress.

what? defending well? more than likely not.

they played the same way they played when i was watching them 10 years ago and i doubt they've changed much in that time. 4 at the back, 2 central midfielders sitting and playing passes to the more creative players, 2 advanced midfielders either side and 2 forwards. they played 4-4-2. you played 4-6-0. your best player was lucas due to his many interceptions, which says it all.

they parked the bus in the same manner leicester have parked the bus all season. ie. they didn't, they played a smart, organised system. being solid defensively and not being reckless going forward vs a 6 man midfield doesn't equate to parking the bus.

I was just going to say that Villarreal now have Liverpool exactly where they want them. They're usually more effective on the counter so Liverpool could be bang in trouble with the onus on them to look for a goal.

Surely you know too much about football to use the bloody formation, which is 100% irrelevant, as an argument?

A 4-2-4 can park the bus against 4-6-0 because the formation isn't at all relevant to the mentality of the team. But you knew that already, so stop trolling.

Villareal are a bloody boring side but I was dumbstruck we didn't play Sturridge. Something's up with him and Klopp. Not confident we'll progress anymore.

Perhaps then it's simply case of you and I having different definitions for 8 outfield players being in the box when a Liverpool cross comes in. And Liverpool regularly having the ball whilst there not be a single Villarreal player outside their own half.

Hmm, don't remember you losing the first leg of that one mate. You'll have to remind me how that went as I thought it was advantage Liverpool starting the second leg given the away goal in a 1-1 draw. But of course you can set me straight there.

"They're usually more effective on the counter so Liverpool could be bang in trouble with the onus on them to look for a goal." Well we were down 2-0 and 3-1 at certain point of the game against Dortmund if my memory is correct. In fact, we scored 4 goals in 2nd half when the onus was on us to look for not just a goal but goals.

This is a blow to Saltire's comments at the end of last season* but Liverpool are definitely still in it.

*"Meh it's only a year's absence. We'll win the EL in the meantime then."
