Shola Ameobi's Notts County
started the last 2 seasons well (although not as convincingly as this) so temper expectations accordingly but resting players and still grinding out wins is a big boy move.

Sexy stylish magpies. Don't want to get carried away... But it's a good start to the season. Swindon are a good side and having made 5 changes, this is a cracking result

Massive props to Nolan for that, not the team that I (or anyone else) would've picked, but it worked perfectly for the awful conditions and the opposition that we had.

I thought that we deserved to win and I was pretty comfortable the whole way through despite us not having lots of the ball. That said, Swindon looked like a useful side who moved the ball pretty well and certainly stuck at it, they should do okay this season. They just never really managed to create any clear chances against what is looking like a very well drilled defence. Only complaint from a Notts point of view is that we again missed three or four excellent chances to finish the game off and spare ourselves a nervy finish. It would've been unjust if that shot that hit the outside of the post for Swindon at the end had gone in, but we need to be more ruthless to avoid it as an issue.

The penalty looked soft to me at the time, but was chatting to a Swindon fan on the train back who was much closer and said he had no complaints about it.

We have become a tough team to beat, deserved win and to change five from a winning team, dropping Jones and Hewitt our two best players from Saturday and getting a performance from Dickenson is verging on the inspired by Nolan.
Swindon looked lively up front and looked like a top ten team . Woolery looked a better player than the one we had on loan, although he did only last til half time.
My worry for us is our lack of goals from open play. At the moment things are going for us but if we concede, can we score two ?
Have to give credit to Yates, he's a monster and wears black boots, none of those poncy dayglow things. Proper mester.

Got to say, I really like Yates after being a bit confused as to why we signed yet another centre midfielder. It's hard to believe he's only 19 years old! Willing to put the hard work in and put his body on the line. Would be happy to make him a permanent addition to the squad personally! It's going to be interesting when O'Conner is back fit who gets the centre midfielder positions as we could easily give it to four different players and that's before Thompson gets a sniff!

Yates is fantastic, wins so many second balls and tackles.

Ah well there goes the away winning run. Need to put in a performance and get 3 points at home on Saturday or Flitcroft can expect some more vocal discontent (wrongly in my opinion but it will happen if we don't pick up at home very soon, already did to an extent v Barnet).

Good luck for the season Notts.

That was a dire game. Poor football, no quality on show from either side. ''Twas like being transported back to the hoofball of decades ago. Results or not, I ain't gonna watch too much of that crap this season.

Really enjoyed the game despite conditions.
Useful point for the stags, we only put four past Wycombe the other week

I think most teams who play us will describe the game as dire no matter the conditions. We don't let teams play, reduce their time on the ball, and look to get it forward and play from there. It's not pretty but at the moment it's effective.

It will be interesting if teams sit off Notts and play on the counter how we would deal with that. My guess is put balls in the box
