I would laugh but you just know that they’ll start winning now.

After reading your post I was thinking Barnet have been involved in a number of relegation escapes in recent reasons and I checked out a fair few past league tables. Not all of them were as dramatic as Newport's, but check this one out:

https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-two/01-april-2011/

That was the League 2 table just before the weekend starting 2 April 2011, when Barnet won a crucial relegation six-pointer at Burton 4-1 and began their resurgence to safety (even then they were reliant on Lincoln not winning their final game at home to a lower midtable Aldershot side who had nothing to play for). After Barnet had played their 38th game (the same number of games as this season) Burton had many games in hand and the other sides most of which had at least one game in hand were miles ahead, survival looking all but impossible. Eventually relegated Lincoln were 12 points ahead with one game in hand.

In the the end, Burton still survived and not at Barnet's expense, but the point is just putting together that winning run was enough to put the fear and doubt into several sides that had previously looked secure, one of them being the one Barnet eventually overhauled.

So it can be done, and fans of teams down the bottom, Barnet and non-Barnet alike, shouldn't write them off just yet.

Obviously I can't judge the situation close at hand as I've seen very little of Barnet over the years, but I'm surprised at the pessimism expressed here. Even if Barnet do go down they've usually been a good side at that level and being in London would be attractive to good lower league players and younger ones that aren't (yet) good enough to play at a higher level. No way can I see them doing a Stockport, York or Torquay, let alone a Halifax, Chester or Hereford as I've always got the impression given their very limited resources they've been a pretty well run club - but the unfavourable opinions of Tony Kleanthous above seem to suggest differently?
Can we not pollute the forum with information from the 2010/11 season, please!

It got embarrassing a long time ago.
5th time?

FWIW, I don't think it's a bad appointment. Allen's the guy you bring in for a mini-season like you're in now and his record at getting a 'bounce' is a good one, even if it usually only lasts a season.

At some point though, TK's just got to let him go and make a sensible, long term appointment instead of gambling on various other ones and having to call his mate up to save him. It'll not work forever.

EDIT - I didn't realise that you have what looks like a favourable run-in, too.

Great for Barnet, though he's got to start winning like NOW.

Makes you wonder if Chesterfield Grimsby and the like will panic now.

You know that things are desperate when I don't even feel like demurring about the re-appointment of Martin Allen given the way that he left us last time.
The fact that his arrival meant the departure of McGhee instantly cancels out the wrong he did us.

As for Westley, well you talked a good game and you did get the team playing better than we did under McGhee but that was a ridiculously low bar you jumped, you couldn't get us playing well for more than one half a match and some of your selections and substitutions were baffling.

Westley's career really has slumped. Remember TalkSport regularly interviewing him and bigging him up when he was manager at Peterborough, not that long ago now. Wonder where he goes from here.

I think the Preston job broke him and he's never been as effective as a manager since then.

Allen? Back at Barnet? For the last 2 months of a season? Oh shit.

Time to transmit emergency frequencies for the clubs in the pack above the bottom 2....

TK took the cheap option last summer by appointing Rossie Eames. TBF to Eames, he started this season well in spite of a major injury crisis but was found desperately wanting once the pressure of a dire winless run got to him.

Since then, TK appointed Mark McGhee who ended up with a disastrous record, and Graham Weasel who fared little better. It is now sheer desperation that sees Allen returning, just as it was in the past.

TK is trying to implement a PL style hierarchy with specialists filling various positions, and in theory, a Head Coach who is given players and encouraged to blood academy youngsters. It's difficult to argue that this has been in any way successful so far and we are seeing the polar opposite of the continuity TK is trying to instill.

Regardless of whether Allen keeps us up (again), we are back to square one again in the summer.

Aye, the Grimsby fans said that.

Meant more the chairman with the manager, though Grimsbys relatively new manager doesn't seem to be able to stop the slide either

I had an inkling this was coming yesterday lunchtime after seeing Westleys post match interview so posted on our forum that I thought change was coming. You can't say you fear the worst and expect a tonking next week without the chairman having serious thoughts about your ability to get a team motivated, especially after a second half capitulation.

I don't like Allen, I don't like his style of play, I don't like the way he plays the fans and media to get them thinking he is more than just a mercenary manager but beggars can't be choosers and his results with us are hard to beat.

Bit of an outsider looking in r.e. barnet but will it do much good changing the manger this late on in the season. Must be the only club I know who bring a manager back for his 5th stint. Even the best of chairman can make a duff manager appointment but barnet seem to go from one idiot to another. The setup when edgar davids seemed strange, where he never went to away games and he was the only foreign manager in the conference at the time (don't think there's any now)

Why did you ever appoint him ? Your owners must have seen what he did to us. But at least they have done something about it -- But it may be too late this season.

Friendly with the chairman apparently.

He was incompetent in every respect.

Sorry if I missed it, but is Tarpey anywhere close to making what would presumably be a much needed return?

Back in training but no news on when he is expected to be fit.

The chairman has taken 2,000 words to say what "I have no idea how to appoint a good manager" would have done in 10.

McGhee, Westley and now Allen. I'm not sure if that is going up or down, but irrespective, they are all mightily close to the bottom of the barrel. Bring in Sol Campbell as assistant and have done with it.

Club is a laughing stock.

I think a big lesson to take from this article is not to appoint managers based on "friends'" recommendations.
