Interesting little comment from our caretaker player/manager Matt Taylor, ‘Now the shackles can come off’.

Yeah, he was shackling all that unbelievable talent Swindon have tucked away.

Jesus Christ he’s left you close to the automatics.

You’ll find out soon enough. We were like you when Bury fans told us what he was like. We ignored it all because his press conference exuded passion, commitment (ha fucking ha) and positive sound bites. The bloke is a shammer. He hates any fans favourites, he loves tinkering with players in wrong positions in the attempt to look a master tactician. I’d imagine most anyone would get you over the line given your current position, but as an ongoing manager Flitcroft is a babbling tool.

Let’s get it right - I’m skeptical of this appointment, but your reaction is nothing short of bizarre considering the position you are in.

What did you expect this season, run away with the title? It’s been a decent season for you lot so far, stop whining.

I’ll tell you why. The football has, largely, been horrific. We’ve been well and truly stuffed by Barnet, Crawley and Stevenage plus others. He’s played players out of position. He’s publicly humiliated one young player and had a major spat with, probably, the best keeper in this league and recruited a butter-fingered replacement. He moans about fans not giving him credit. He’s recruited some right old dross, albeit a couple of decent ones too. His post match pressers are a thing to behold if you can understand what he is saying. Yes, we’re in the play offs but without his mistakes we’d be a whole lot higher. As I’ve said before he may well get you up - as most managers would from your position - but long term he won’t cut the mustard.

I've always had a poor opinion of Flitcroft, when he was at Bury he disrespected our team a couple of times and just sounded like an arrogant prick.

I think many Town fans have been spoiled in the past and can't seem to get over that. When we were last down here, Di Canio and his massive budget took us up very easily and very stylishly. We have seen some brilliant football at Swindon historically and as many on here know, football fans have VERY long memories.

This season, as ID has said, the football has been pretty much back to basics with a squad of fairly limited footballers. We, as Swindon fans, have to accept we are a league 2 club and have no divine right to success, we have to work bloody hard at it like others. Hats off to Accrington who on a very smal budget are more than likely going to get promoted. I have no idea what kind of football Stanley, or indeed Shrewsbury (who are the shock side of the season) play but they are making a mockery of the teams with bigger crowds and budgets.

One perspective is Swindon have took six points of Mansfield, are not behind ‘em by much yet Swindon squad, on paper, in terms of depth, quality, are lacking in comparison.

I’m taking the criticism towards him on board, like I said I’m very skeptical but I defiantly sense some form of entitlement from Swindon fans, it’s coming across like you are mid-table dross with no chance of promotion.

I will assess this as best I can shortly, (I am currently at a signing for my new limited edition, bonus adaptation of my book, and there is a large queue). I will try and take my bias and utter dislike for this man and give him a fair trial.

Bloody hell! We’ve been pretty shite for 3 and a bit season’s now. Our historical home is L1 with the occasional foray into the league higher and, fortunately, the rare-ish dip into the depths. Nobody I know thinks we have some divine right not to be in the basement. It’s the swings and roundabouts of a lower league club. What’s really pissing people off, I think, is the steady erosion of what has generally been a good fan base. This is seen to be down to the owner and by association his appointed managers. It wouldn’t have taken much to get our team in the autos even with the squad we have. Flitcroft was seen as pissing away the opportunity with his bizarre decisions.

Before you read, this will be a long post :)

Okay, I must say at this late stage in the season, and with a good squad already in place, it would not surprise me in the slightest if Flitcroft gets you promoted. Especially if it is the same Flitcroft who arrived at Gigg Lane in December 2013, full of passion and enthusiasm.

If it is with that attitude he approaches the job at Field Mill then you will see some good attacking football and probably a few high scoring wins and even automatic promotion with style.

He will however, most likely fail at league one level as it is IMO much tougher up here than league two. And once he loses a game or two, or players make a mistake or two, he starts making ridiculous changes to the teams and much worse, persists with them regardless of results.

He will at times play excellent, attacking football and if you get on a good run then you will look unbeatable at times.

However there are so many negatives. Even with a budget, he doesn't know what to do with it and he will likely end up signing too many players for one position and leave you very light in many other areas.
He can't sign a goalkeeper to save his life. I think in his near three years at Bury he used 14 goalkeepers. Only one, Pope, who already had an excellent reputation was any good.
He will fall out with and force out good players and replace them with expensive dross.
He will remain loyal to players who don't particularly deserve loyalty.
He will play players ridiculously out of position and persist with it regardless of anything.
He will play players when they are unfit.
Your list of injuries will go through the roof, by all account Flitcroft's training methods were to blame for our on going injury problems. Did he at any point change them? Not a chance.
His assistant Futcher is an apparent bully who many players fall out with.
He constantly claims he 'bloods the youth' he doesn't, he might play one kid for five minutes in the checkatrade trophy and then harp on about it like he is Matt Busby afterwards.
Don't expect any big performance at the B2Net this season. His league record against Rochdale for us was a shambles. In March 2016 they beat us 3-0 at Spotland and it could have been 6! Flitcroft spent the game with his hand in his pockets staring into space and apparently rang Keith Hill at half time with the score at 2-0.
More importantly, he lost our biggest game at Gigg Lane in years against Bolton last season with a whimper. He started with a negative formation, we didn't have a single effort on goal, and despite conceding two questionable penalties we were easily beaten. Flitcroft blamed the ref and just seemed to shrug his shoulders as if it wasn't a big deal. This defeat came after a 2-0 defeat at Spotland a week earlier, where, at 1-0 down Flitcroft had taken off Zeli Ismail, our main threat on the right, and put the awful, unfit stiker, Hallam Hope on at right wing. Our attacks petered out and Dale scored again. Flitcroft blamed the ref and shrugged off the defeat as though it was another 90 minutes.

His last few games kind of summed him up. We were already approaching a record breaking number of straight defeats. He still refused to blood any of the exciting young lads, instead opting to keep them on the bench but picking and playing anyone but them. In particular out of position or unfit players.
We played Southend at home, and despite having several full backs on the bench he went with Neil Danns at right back and Kelvin Etuhu at centre back. Both are midfielders and neither were fully fit. We lost 4-1.
He then started the exact same team against Wimbledon on the Tuesday in a cup replay, we lost 5-0 and we were 4-0 down at half time. He was sacked the next day.

Lastly, he doesn't ever learn from his mistakes and as you can see, it is never his fault.

Sorry about the essay.

What is the explanation for Swindon only drawing three games so far this season?

We’ve never given anyone a tonking - winning most games by the odd goal. We are poor defensively. We are/were the very definition of a could have won, could of lost team. Lot of our games have been a complete lottery as to the result.

They didn’t ‘tonk’ Mansfield at the Mill, but they are the only team that have won all season, comfortably too. Take away Cardiff in the FA cup and Lincoln in the boycott cup that they don’t boycott but fully support.

Yet he took you up and kept you up in League 1. What did you want?? From someone who hasn’t been managed by Flitcroft I’d say he is a good bloody manager. I saw Swindon last season. They were terrible. Fucking shit. Just leave Flitcroft alone

Good appointment for Mansfield. Flitcroft is very much an old school manager and a terrific character. A dying breed.

We've lost 2 official games at home all season, which is a pretty special effort

It’s a very impressive stat no doubt, and makes you wonder why the home fans sat behind the dugouts would be so aggitated and by all accounts abusive to their own manager!?

A real puzzler when there was so much success at Field Mill
