Bloody loads or not. Comparable or not. I'm glad (now) that you made sure.

I'm just delighted (now) that you left the pain and pleasure of the playoffs to Notts.

I have had some big highs supporting Notts but that 7-10 days covering both playoff games ended up being probably the most fun ultimately enjoyable periods as a Notts fan.

It was truly spectacular.

They can never take it away.

Best way to get promoted, but until you do that horrible gnawing feeling in the pit of your stomach is not nice.

Enough time has gone on now that I can admire Grimsbys play off campaign the season before. Their games against Notts and Wrexham were absolutely brilliant back and forth affairs. Would have been amazing to be a Grimsby fan that year (probably the only time I'll ever say that).

Amen to that.

That horrible gnawing feeling in the pit of your stomach was there for most of the semi final and most of the final. Horrible but made it all the more amazing for those last few minutes in the semi final and those oh so beautiful hours that followed the penalties in the final.

Grimsby's playoff triumph the previous season was similarly dramatic, not as nerve racking but was certainly more impressive.

Speak for yourself, we did three lots of extra time that were all decided by a single goal! All away from Blundell Park too. My nerves were shot to shit several times over.

And yep insane couple of weeks those playoffs. Been very lucky the last two seasons to have had two of the top three away trips of the last thirty or forty years or so in such close proximity . Wrexham and Southampton were once in a decade style occasions so to have them in back to back seasons totally vindicated all the Bromleys, Wealdstones, etc.

No doubt we spent bloody loads last year. Because we couldn't leave anything to chance that said the year before if we'd have gone up through the play offs our wage bill and that of Stockport, Chesterfield and Notts County were all pretty comparable. For years our budget was about a third of the top clubs despite usually having far bigger crowds than most so I'm fine with it.

It would be interesting to see how ours this year compares to the top spender in this division (Gillingham).
We won’t be top spenders.
Not even top 7 according to Harris.

Wrexham clearly spent trillions so we hugely overachieved to take it to the death last season.
We are all nothing compared to the football powerhouse that is Saudi Arabia. Even Wrexham are small fry financially.

You haven't lived until you see your team promoted at Wembley with 10 men for almost the entire game. Exhausted doesn't come close to describing how physically and mentally drained everybody was. I could barely stand by day 5 of the celebrating.

He’s going to say that isn’t he. If he fucks up he won’t want to admit to wasting a fuck ton of money from a very healthy budget.

Already been through this, suggesting you won’t be top 7 budget wise pre-season is code word for our wage bill is off the rails.

I bet but at least you had the temporary luxury of leading games. We had that for a grand total of just a few minutes out of the two games that both went to extra time. Oh and then throw in the drama of a penalty shootout to determine your whole season.

What you did to Notts at Meadow Lane we did almost identical to Borehamwood at the same venue, both times the team who progressed with very late equalisers and winners deserved it. There was something rather nice about the undeniable similarities.

Managers only ever downplay budgets when they know it's at the top.

First move in the "Decreasing Pressure on me as Manager" Playbook.

We all see through you Harris.

He also is going to say it if it is true, or close to it. We have been linked with about 8 strikers, all of whom have gone to other clubs - May, Akinyemi, Dallas, Pigott and Jephcott among them.

Meanwhile Stockport give a 3 year contract to Nick Powell and Andy Cook would have demanded top dollar to renew with Bradford.

Will we ever know, though, when so many fees are undisclosed and salaries only subject to speculation?

On one of my first trips to the north I witnessed a fellow who I had previously thought to be decent putting ‘red sauce’ on a roast dinner.

And that was the end of that.

Also chips with shepherd's pie, you what?

Wouldn’t have chips with a shepherds pie, but if we like having a steak and ale pie etc if out i’d have chips with it over mash.

Love ketchup but not sure it lives on a sunday lunch

Surely if you’re going to get out of the conference you’d at least win the thing!

For understandable reasons, i’m not keen on playoffs

It's the ideal and sensible route but not as much fun , financially rewarding or memorable as the playoff route.

Plus we had Wrexham with their almost 100% perfect home record and 111 points to contend with.

Yeah fair point on the pens. I'd fully accepted at Wrexham that our fate was going to be decided by pens before they let Waterfall have a free header on 119mins. And yep, I remember thinking that your Borehamwood match was similar to ours at yours. Highly doubt we'd have come back from 2-0 down though had you been given that second pen.

Easier said than done when you don't have the top budget. I think in every season bar one we've been down there the side with the most money pumped into their playing budget has won it. We've always been around the 4th/5th biggest so playoffs was always our remit. Having said that, I'd fancy our chances going toe to toe with Chesterfield, Oldham and Woking for next season's title.

We had one of the lowest budgets in the division (certainly in the bottom half) when we won the NL in 20/21. We also weren’t properly full-time either.

Haha, well still better to have it, our budget wasn’t that big

Surely though budget can’t always be the case, barrow, harrogate and sutton have all gone up (think 2 of the 3 won it)are here and they’re holding their own (and usually beating us to boot)

It was a weak conference last season compared to normal and this season looks absolutely awful, given how they’ve spent it would be an astonishing failure by our friends across the m1 not to come up.

Harrogate? Barrow and Sutton I'll give you but Harrogate had a healthy budget.

I've got a sneaking suspicion someone like York, Oldham or Barnet may spoil Chesterfields party, but I agree they should be clear favourites.

Yeah, not saying it can't be done on a budget. Was specifically talking about title winners in the years we were in that division. Think it was only probably Barnet that didn't have a bigger one than us. Crawley, Fleetwood and Luton would have dwarfed ours those seasons. I reckon Mansfield and Stockport had a good 500k at least on us and Cheltenham would have been close, they certainly weren't plucky little underdogs like many thought they were. Playoffs are a different kettle of fish as we found out by getting beaten by Newport and Gateshead in our first two attempts, anyone's to win once you're in them.

Last season's National League was weak without a doubt just look at the record breaking points totals of the top two.

Weak conference but also probably one of the hardest to win the title compared to previous seasons.

Yeah absolute freak of a season really. I'd say up there with that classic City/Liverpool title race when Kompany scored the worldie as one of the best domestic title races in recent times, made all the better by you having to play each other in April. We were at Donny away that day and the amount of chatter about that match even during our match was mad. Would have been a travesty had you lot not gone up.

It was weak in so far as the top two were streets ahead of anyone else. Only Wrexham or Notts were ever going to win that division.

That said the league as a whole is stronger than it was a decade or so ago. Clubs are more professional across the board-- there are almost no part time teams anymore.

When we first went down there were always half a dozen clubs who would get hammered 8 or 9 nil at times and would also just dump all their players towards the end of the season to save money which really skewed the run in. Back then you wouldn't have got three clubs like Scunthorpe, Yeovil and Torquay getting relegated (maybe just Scunny who were a basket case).

I’m not sure without looking back, but nothing close to what Wrexham spent obviously; less than Luton though so we overachieved! Don’t see the relevance to my post mind.

Embrace it don’t be sensitive about it.

I'm not sensitive about it, I couldn't give a monkeys what you think about Wrexham. However, lets not pretend it's only Wrexham, FGR and Salford that have been throwing the wedge about to get out of The Conference.

I've got Mansfield's accounts here. Creditors are listed as follows:

June 2011: £2.6m
June 2012: £3.9m
June 2013: £5.7m

Does that mean Mr Midlife-Crisis spent/put in £3.1m over turnover in 24 months? I'm no accountant, so apologies if that isn't how it works.
