Loved it. If you're a fan of the first, go see it. Doesn't follow quite the same style as the original, but tells the story of 4 seriously fucked up former friends working out what to do in their mid 40's

Blade Runner is one of those films that get better on subsequent viewing.

You know, I've only ever seen Blade Runner once and was just about to say finally, somebody else who thought it wasn't that great. I found it quite a bore, However, I was going to go on to say that it has been a few years now since I watched it and I intend to watch it again to give it another chance. Glad to know it gets better on repeat viewings.

That really is the case with some films. I remember the first time I saw The Big Lebowski and thought it was alright, but nothing special. I've now seen it 4 or 5 times and consider it one of my favourite movies.

Yeah I'm the same with films like The Prestige and The Ninth Gate, when I first saw them I thought they were pretty dull, but caught them a few times when they are shown on tv and began to like them and actually now love them particularly The Ninth Gate. Blade Runner is the same.

The scene in the protestant club where Renton and Sickboy get up on stage had me crying with laughter.

Rear Window (1954)

A photographer is stuck in his small flat after a breaking his leg. He spends his time looking out of his window at his neighbours, documenting their days and judging each of them. Soon he sees one of his neighbours acting suspiciously and he begins to believe that he has witnessed a murder.

Classic, obviously! I have seen it before but I fancied watching it again and I enjoyed it just as much this time around.

First of all, the set is just fantastic. We get glimpses into each flat, the courtyard, the bar/restaurant across the street and, of course, into L.B. Jefferies' flat itself. That's it. And Hitchcock squeezes so much out of it.

The glimpses we get into the lives of each of the neighbours are entertaining, too and really flesh out the space as something living, breathing, and real. "Miss Lonelyhearts" is a suicidal alcoholic who throws parties for imaginary guests. "Miss Torso" is a...flexible young ballet dancer who throws parties for actual guests, always male. A young, just-married couple move in and have a rough time adjusting to their new life, which Jefferies gets a real kick out of seeing as their troubles back up his already stated views on marriage. Then we have the frustrated musician, the couple with the dog and, of course, the suspected murderer himself.

The plot is simple but it is paced and told so perfectly that you can't help but get sucked in and indulge in more than a spot of voyueristic amatuer detective work alongside Jefferies. Just impressively handled and really well done.

Sette orchidee macchiate di rosso (Seven Blood-Stained Orchids) (1972)

A woman is attacked by a killer dubbed "the half moon maniac" but manages to escape. She, with the help of her husband, soon finds a common thread between herself, the killer and six other women and must try to track down the killer before more are killed.

This wasn't bad. It felt a little giallo-by-numbers at points, though.

Highlights included some cool psych out music, hippie party scenes and one of said hippies uttering the line "say man, have you got 1000 lira for a candy freak"?

Manchester By The Sea - (2016)

The premise is simple: when his brother Joe dies, Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is forced to take care of his teenage nephew in his hometown, from which he moved away years earlier to escape his demons from a trauma years earlier.

Beautifully shot film and the location is stunning what with the snow coverd landscape across the harbour with the trawlers. The movie is very real and strangely raw to be filmed so beautifully (but I am a sucker for movies shot in the winter). It's slow moving enough to notice but not enough to bore you, cause that's life.

Videodrome (1983)

The owner/programmer of an underground TV channel/station that airs sleazy softcore pornography and violence around the clock stumbles upon a strange broadcast of undetermined origin and becomes obsessed with it.

This was a complete mindfuck in the very best possible way and that applies to the plot as much as the visuals.

Visually the film is dominated by TV screens, static, the colour red, videotapes and FLESH. It is full of ridiculous special effects, too. At one point we see a gun slowly fusing itself to the flesh of a man's arm, with metallic veins replacing the natural veins. We also see the main character develop a vhs shaped slit in his stomach and Debbie Harry burn her breasts with a lit cigarette. Numerous instances of body parts coming out of television sets. VHS tapes with chomping teeth.

The plot revolves around a strange broadcast of violent scenes which is found by one of the engineers at the tv station (Channel 83). Further into the film we learn that the footage is a trojan horse for the "videodrome" signal which causes the growth of a tumour in the brain of whoever is exposed to it. The tumour causes bizarre hallucinations and also makes the host completely open to suggestion; effectively making him or her a killing machine for the broadcasters of the signal for a short period of time before death. The broadcasters make certain assumptions about the type of person that would be interested in watching such violent footage and are actively targeting them with a kind of genocide as the final goal.

There are lots of themes at play here; the power of the media, fetishisation, the blurred line between sex and violence, the increasing importance of technology and a kind of joint evolution between man and technology. And Debbie Harry's breasts.

Rabid, Scanners, The Fly, Naked Lunch, The Dead Zone are all quality, even before you get to his later stuff with Viggo Mortensen et al. Shame he's not doing another film though, he still has much to say.

Angst (Fear) (1983)

A mentally unstable man is released from prison and his first act is to carry out the murder he has been planning during his incarceration.

Ugly, drawn-out, hyper-real depiction of a twisted killer in frenzied action. Nothing is slick and we see every single detail and mistake. The killer had planned the perfect murder but that isn't what transpires. We see premature deaths, the killer himself falling over while carrying victims, frantic attempts to catch fleeing victims and it all feels so real. Nothing is flicked over or rushed, there are fifteen to twenty minute sequences of single actions such as the killer dragging victims to the boot of his car.

It is interestingly shot with extreme close-ups and jaunty angles but it never feels stylised - it almost feels like raw snuff footage at times.

The soundtrack sounds something like the instrumental stuff Burzum released while in prison - soft drones and ambience, which works well with the molasses pace of the on screen action.

Gattaca (1997)

Set in a future where genetic engineering creates superhuman individuals and nautrally born children are a rarity. One of these naturally born children assumes the identity of a wheelchair-bound superhuman in order to pursue a career in space exploration.

Girlfriend's choice for FILM NIGHT™. This wasn't really my cup of tea, though I didn't hate it - the premise was interesting but aside from that nothing really stood out to me.

I did like the phrase de-gene-erate, though.

Same here. I've done a re-watch a few weeks ago and had the same thought about it (btw: German title for Evil Dead is "Tanz der Teufel" (Dance of the Devils)). My favourite "Ash" film is the third, Army of Darkness because it has the "humour" in it. Ash is Cult (I like the "Ash vs Evil Dead" Series too).
I'm a big Bruce Campbell fan, an actor who doesn't take himself too serious. I've even read his books

Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
Gerard Butler goes after the killers of his wife and daughter when the justice system let's him down he goes after them as well. A dull and stupid film. 4/10.

The LEGO Batman Movie (2017)

It was superb. Lightly touching on some basic human themes (ala loneliness, relationships, self awareness) but in a fun(ny)-appropriate way. Not every banter device will tickle a response, but the way in which all different 'bad' guys from across the movie ranges were incorporated was cool. It wasn't a movie I had to endure, but participated/engaged with in its' experience.

My son even shed a tear for Batman's pain, showing me an emotional intelligence. (#ParentCunt #HumbleBrag)

Overall, 4.5 bags from me. Not changing the landscape, but decorating it well.

I watched Sing Street. It's about an Irish teenager who starts a band to impress a girl in the 80s. Loads of nostalgia for people a bit older than me, but the film is basically fantastic and people who like good films should watch it.
