Looks like it's going to be City as suspected. £60m and not even first choice as made clear in the article. Will he be happy to be a bench warmer just to get out of Southampton? I was under the impression one of the reasons he wanted Liverpool last summer was because he's pretty much guaranteed selection when fit.

Still, at least Southampton fans will be ecstatic that their best player is fucking off to a team other than Liverpool.

Still doubt the Liverpool thing is dead, I'm not really convinced there will be media leaks after the Liverpool leak in the summer. We will want it hush hush until it's completed.

Hope he flops wherever he goes. His attitude this season has been fucking lousy and the lack of effort he has put in on the pitch is disgrace.

He won't flop wherever he ends up. He's just disinterested at the moment.

You never know. We all thought Lovren looked a rock at Saints.
Saw VVD at Celtic way before he came to England, he was class then too. He's top quality when focused. City will be getting another superb player to push them further and further away.

Is it possible to look bad if you're a defender for Celtic in Scottish football?

I've seen a lot of pish up here believe me, even at Celtic/Rangers (when they were good); and VVD looked a million miles better than most; Southampton paid a fair whack for him when they signed him - 13 mill or so - if he was average at best they would'nt have forked out all that particularly with their scouting network. Wanyama was another player who stood out in the recent past, and he's doing ok for himself as well isn't he.

Underperforming player that plays like a c*** if he loses interest, sounds perfect.

He'll go city, play the odd game and will end up somewhere like Stoke, we've seen it and now I write it.

I agree with you on VVD. At Celtic he was more than a class above pretty much everyone and it was no surprise he went for the money he did, he would have gone for far more had he been at a Prem club.

Has anyone other than Liverpool shown interest in him? Other than us I think he'd slot in to any of the other top 6 or whatever it is now teams and out of them all I think Liverpool is probably the worst suited for him as he won't be playing alongside a decent CB to cover him when he does make his odd fuck up.
He's going to City, but IF he did somehow head to Liverpool, he'll play alongside Matip or Gomez (once Clyne is fit) and will help bring them on. Both of these are capable defenders, its Lovren that's the loose cannon.

Daniel Sturridge is expected to leave Liverpool in January. With Stoke City, Hull City and Holby City all interested.

Too money money for me. Fingers crossed it works out. Could be worth it just to see the reaction on Saintsweb.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's waaay too much for him. Southampton have had our pants down here. If we can't get him back to his best it will be the worst buy ever, his form this season has been shit.

I shouldn't give a shit. It's not my money. But I do.

He's what we need. He won't solve all our defensive woes that's for sure, but he's a fair few levels up on Lovren anyway and that can only be a good thing!

Really thought the deal was dead and that City were set to pounce.

I have no idea about this to be honest. We need a defender mind.

VVD is class. It's a lot of money, but he'll prove worth it, especially if we start stopping conceding silly goals, the money will take care of itself.

Yes, you've paid well over the odds but that's what happens when you upset the selling club with your vile tapping up tactics. Will be interesting to watch our resident Liverpool fans attempt to justify the fee over the next few months, given their stance on the Pogba fee.

Fair enough Liverpool. Makes the summer’s efforts meaningless and we’d have most probably been better off with the money than VvD this season.

I wouldn’t worry about his form this season. He’s just been a c*** and it’s worked out for him.

I can't see it being paid in full in Jan, but probably about £50 mill should be incoming then.

£70m upfront riding to £75m from Les Reeds puppet at the telegraph.

Player power wins once more at Southampton.

You shouldn't give a crap about the money. You should give a crap that it might sort out your defensive frailties. It will certainly help...

Fair enough if that's true, FSG have always said in the summer the money was there for players, and it looks like they've maybe thought of structuring it that way such that Chelsea may baulk at paying upfront, and maybe even City would have seconds thoughts.

Indeed, too many silly goals given away yet again this season, Sevilla home and away, Spartak away, Watford away, Arsenal away and Everton at home. Had VVD been included in the side from the summer, I'm certain a few of those draws would've been turned into wins, and we'd have qualified for the knockout rounds of the CL quicker, and be closer to Man Utd for second.

Precisely.

You want to compete for trophies you need to spend big.

Liverpool are magnificent going forward. If they improve at the back they will be in business. I suspect they still need more at the back though and that will cost them big time but they've taken a giant step...

Player power wins at every club, as it will with Coutinho leaving for Barca... Which will of course fund this transfer.

Loving the thread on Saintsweb. Full of Southampton fans calling Liverpool a shithole and pretending they don't care.
