For most of my life. I grew up and live near Cardiff, but they insisted on becoming a #globalbrand and it isn't for me. My family is from Newcastle, so they were always my second team, and have filled the vacancy in the number one spot.
I figured that was what happened. Kudos.

Laporte is heading to City for £57m according to the Guardian.

Pep and City have been linked with him for a few years now and I think he'll suit them but, as I felt when Sanchez was linked with them (haha, gazumped), he is of a certain quality that makes it hard for me to understand the need for him. Stones and Otamendi are a fine partnership and neither of them are at an age where they need replacing nor are they going to be happy with a spot on the bench.

It's never bad to sign quality but I think in a case like this it comes with unnecessary headaches - unless Guardiola fancies switching to a back three.

Reckon Laporte is a better CB than both Otamendi and Stones. They're quite accident-prone these two all said and done.

Then I suppose the question is do you think he is enough of an upgrade on either of Otamendi or Stones to justify a £57m outlay?

I find the pricetage question useless. He is an upgrade though.

Well, it's a matter of priorities and need. You spend according to the personnel you have at your disposal. City spent ridiculous money on their full backs but they needed them as the ones they had were ageing and unsuitable for a Guardiola side. That made sense.

I don't think you should spend £57m on a centre back unless you see that area of your team as needing serious/immediate upgrades. In this case I don't necessarily think that the need is there.

What they could do with is a Mangala replacement, a cheaper backup centre back more in line with the profile of player that Guardiola likes, or a Kompany replacement without the injury problems - an experienced and tough centre back to tighten things up and provide a bit of leadership when they are struggling towards the end of a game.

Well think of Laporte as a replacement for both Kompany and Mangala and there we go.
Maybe they'll let the other pair go and keep that Aradabaiyo (?) lad for their 4th choice. Or like you say, play a back 3.

But Laporte is neither an experienced warrior or an inexpensive backup option.

Pep just wants everyone to stop saying Stones is their most expensive centre back to take some presure off him.

Laporte has been a long time target of Pep's

Think it's a brilliant signing and eases the pressure on Otamendi and Stones to remain consistent given Kompany's problems and Mangala's issues.

Personally I'm delighted with the signing. Options a plenty.

Who do you leave out, assuming Guardiola sticks with a back four?

I know he'll rotate but going into the biggest games, who do you think he'll go with as his preferred pairing?

I reckon there's a good chance that Arsenal don't sign Aubameyang. Wenger is apparently lukewarm on him and I suspect he will use the price issue to avoid signing him. He starts today for Dortmund after having being left out of the squad recently.

If Wenger never fancied him then why the fuck would you let this shit drag on?

So that's nigh on £300m spent by Guardiola since his arrival. No, not at all "chequebook".

I don't think it is Pags. Yes he's spending a lot of money, but there's a clear playing style and philosophy. I'd have put Pellegrini more in the chequebook category from his man city stint. Purely putting out the most expensive players and hoping their ability wins you games.

It's a clear playing style and philosophy that requires a ludicrous budget, and has throughout his managerial career. Hence the accusation.

Laporte has played 150+ games in La Liga, man. Hardly a rookie. Reckon Guardiola won't regret this.

I'm not saying that he is a rookie, I'm just looking at specific profiles of player that they lack in their centre back selection and he doesn't fit any of them.

Are Utd fans bragging about “beating” City to Sanchez? City weren’t prepared to pay him 200k more than the highest paid player in the Prem. It’s not like he chose Utd over you...?

You misquoted me entirely.

I said "gazumped".

Also before we gazumped City and signed Sanchez, who was the highest paid player in the league and what did he earn?

I'm not sure what the last part of your post means, he did choose United and I had never personally offered him a financial contract.

“Gazumped” suggests you somehow beat City to the post, which to be fair is true but only because you were prepared to offer Sanchez a wage even City thought was unbelievable. Hardly something to boast about.

I believe Aguero was highest earner on 300k... (though happy to be corrected)

Admittedly, the last line is a mess. I’m not even sure what i was trying to say.

I don't believe that City actually dropped out of the race because of money, I think it was honestly because they felt slighted that he even considered United's offer after giving his word to Guardiola and City that he would join them. You could say money was the indirect cause of CIty dropping out, in that Sanchez considered a higher offer from United, but not the direct cause as they could easily have paid him what we have.

I honestly thought Pogba was the highest earner but I don't know or believe half of the figures that come out. Rooney was supposedly on £300k a decade ago, according to some.

Sanchez was supposedly on a £350k per week base salary with it being boosted by image rights percentages according to some of the more reputable media outlets and then you had the Daily Mail and the Sun upping the figure every few hours in the run up to his confirmation with £500k a week being the most extreme number printed, I believe. It's hard for us to know the true figure but I'm not in the habit of believing much of what papers like the Mail and the Sun write - it's more than likely over £400k including those image rights bonuses but I'm guessing.

Right you are, time flies. Or drags.

That article states that "the new deal involves a basic wage of £250,000 a week, but with commercial rights making it more lucrative for the player, up to £300,000."

It's funny how these things get reported.

Laporte and Otamendi I believe would be his preferred choice..... Nico has been immense this season (Liverpool game aside)

I swear to god this is the most biased thing I've ever read.

Let's settle that he's on 100k and chose you over City because he wants to win the league.

The most biased? I'm sure I've seen you responding to St. Juste in the past.

OK, the Sun and the Mail are most likely right.

It's official, Sanchez is on 700k per week.

I didn't know that you were a religious man, by the way.

If you believe the Sun Deeney is in talks with WBA over a 21 million pound move.

Seem daft to consider selling to a relegation rival if true!

As i say its the Sun though.
