I went to the Porterhouse in Dublin the other day. They had Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier on tap which I've never seen anywhere else (seen it plenty in bottles) which was good stuff. I can't really remember what else I had (I think one was a Porterhouse Red) but the selected was superb as you'd expect. There was plenty of time the other nights to gorge myself on Guinness of course.

Poacher's Choice and Blandford Fly are both absolutely disgusting.

In terms of beers you can get easily nationwide - Oakham, Brewdog, Thornbridge and Badger are all solid.

The beers I'm absolutely loving at the moment are Tempest. So nice. Long White Cloud is a beaut.

I went to Beverley this weekend, btw. One last visit to the East Riding before my parents leave Hull for good next month. My favourite spot was Chequers Micropub. Pretty sure it's a house that was converted to a Chinese takeaway that was then converted into a pub. It was a "real ale-ite" wet dream. They don't serve fizz. They don't serve spirits. It's cask ale all the way (and a few wine options for the little ladies). In fact, Beverley was absolutely full of pubs and they were all packed. Decent little town for a visit.

My parents are now moving to Southampton so I shall have to get planning for a crawl there. Recommendations gratefully received.

Also, I'm going to Sheffield for the first time soon. The (Harrogate-esque) station tap room thingy is first port of call and the Kelham Island is a must too. Really looking forward to getting round as many others as possible. Again, grateful for any tips!

No idea on Southampton or Sheffield I'm afraid (other than the KI which seemingly racks up the awards). My folks moved to Arundel earlier this year so I've slightly enhanced my knowledge of south coast pubs in that time. Unfortunately they've now rendered their house temporarily uninhabitable - some feeble excuse about it being ancient and in need of a serious makeover, but I'm sure it's just a nefarious attempt to prevent me from exploring other choice watering holes.

Always dangerous jumping in at the end of a thread on unknown topics, but seeing as beers are being mentioned a lot, there's a decent brewery in Arundel. They have a shop down at the bottom by the river. Can recommend the Stronghold and the Smokehouse Porter. The Sussex Gold is a bit shi'ite though.

Yeah, been to the shop actually. Pretty good having a brewery shop a few minutes walk away. The beers I've had have been fine-decent without really wowing me. Pretty sure I've not tried the ones you mention though so ta for the recommendation - will give them a go next time I visit.

Noticing a big domination from pales at the moment. I know they're 'in' and I do like them but I'd still probably side with a bitter more often than not so it's a bit of a shame.

Of about 11 ales, only Thornbridge Lord Marples appeals as an alternative. Decent session ale though. Not sure I've had a dodgy Thornbridge yet.

It's getting better as we move into winter though, it's always hard to find darker ales in pubs in the summer.

At first this was my thought and then I looked outside and realised it's December tomorrow. Tbh there's usually a decent bitter option where you go but this one just seemed a bit weird. At least 6 or 7 IPAs on the board...and that wasn't even including the keg offerings.

I'm definitely becoming an old Yorkshireman already.

For those that haven't tried it, this Taste The Difference offering from Sainsburys is really good..

It's only £1.25 a bottle (335ml IIRC), weighs in at 6.3% and is well worth the price IMO. Not a session beer as such, but full of flavour and one to savour. I found it a few months ago but now the other locals seem to have caught on and it flies off the shelf at the moment >< kinda annoying to nip for a couple of bottles and find it sold out.

Really like Chatsworth Gold as well, which is good as it's on in a few of the pubs around here - not sure how far south it gets

I get bottles of beer most years for Christmas (which is always good) but normally they're the fairly standard types you see in those classic ales collection boxes etc. Currently having a King Goblin and enjoying it quite a lot actually. Never been crazy about any Wychwood offerings I've had in the past but this is pretty good. Do like a nice malty beer.

BUMP. Went on an admittedly not very arduous but fairly rare pilgrimage back to my hometown to see Ks play (and lose, the bastards) just before Christmas. Stopped off at this place - The Antelope - near Surbiton station on the way. Really interesting beer selection, ten handpumps featuring some quite unusual stuff alongside a few ales from their on-site microbrewery Big Smoke. Had a couple of pints of a session pale Solaris which was rather nice. WOULD RETURN.

Also got a Christmas crate in over the festive season, but from a different company than I had ordered from previously. Decent selection - some better than others as you'd expect. I think the most unusual one was a beer called The Mayan from The Ilkley Brewery (familiar with this at all, Magic)? It advertised itself as a chocolate chipotle stout and, well... I suppose it tasted like one. Definitely one to file under "interesting" although I'm not altogether sure I like my beers with a fiery aftertaste :err:

I'm familiar with the brewery but not that one! Not sure I'd be causing a stampede at the bar to order one of them though to be fair...definitely one of those I'd probably only end up having as part of a gift set.

I believe I had another one from them in the same case - think it was Ilkley Black which may well have been quite nice but it kinda got overshadowed by their chipotle offering! Their Mary Jane also made an appearance at a local pub down here once. Was fairly reasonable from what I recall.

Tbf in the late 90s the beer market was dominated by bland mass-produced lagers. Hate using the term "craft beer" as it's so ill-defined but I can quite imagine that Sierra Nevada would have seemed like a real antidote to what was on offer in the average boozer.

Popped into the new North Bar that's recently opened here. First sample of their beer was Sputnik...steep at £4.50 but thoroughly enjoyable tbh. Don't think there are many branches outside of Leeds/Yorkshire but worth a go if the rest of their brews are as good.
