Top lads at Brewdoggydog. Totally tankslapper. Great atmosphere. Should be good!

Brewdog's marketing and branding has been pretty obnoxious and wanky from the get-go so at least they're consistent.

If Brewdog only rates a "pretty", then what, on a Scoville Scale of aggravating marketing, what would qualify as "very obnoxious and wanky"?

Logos carved into the foreheads of dead orphans, jack-o'-lantern stylee?

Hey friends, here's another beer deal!

Think I quite like the concept and the price but not sure whether I'm going to go in for it or not. Hmm... someone make up my mind for me.

I do quite fancy wheat beers at the moment, although most of the ones in the 'classic' box would be new to me too.

Shame it's German beers. If it'd been uk ales I might have been tempted by it.

It is a nice concept and a good price, but if you're anything like me you'll end up in loads of boozy situations around Crimbo anyway. Do you really need 24 more beers?

I guess there's no rule saying you have to drink them during December. *shrug*

I've been drinking more continental beers lately but I'm still not feeling pilsners or wheat beers, really.

Yeah, I'm basically thinking along the same sort of lines. Not really worried about it being excessive (coz, y'know, I'll drink it) but I think it may perhaps be a bit unnecessary. As you say the month is pretty boozy as it is and I'll probably order a box to my parents' place to drink while I'm down there, but that's likely to be something where I have more control over the selection. Unsure as to how diverse and interesting these are going to be (I like wheats but mostly in moderation, pilsners are fine but I'd prolly just rather have an ale... that sort of thing).

Very much a fan of Thornbridge. I can enjoy their beers more often now that we've finally got a Waitrose. And as it's practically the only decent sized supermarket within walking distance I imagine it'll probably get a fair bit of custom from me (Oakham's Citra in your 4 for £6 deal? YES PLEASE).

BEER UPDATE. I went to a PUNK SHOW in a BREWERY recently (well it was sort of outside the brewery really) but it was quite a lot of fun. £2.50 for a pint of one of the Little Beer Corporation's rather nice beers. Also went to the Woking beer festival for the second year running at the weekend, although for some unearthly reason attended the early Saturday session instead of the much more sensible evening session, which made for a very boozy day. Enjoyed it quite a lot although I think old LEN and his WURLITZER remains the highlight.

If you have/get a Mywaitrose card you can choose some of the Thornbridge beers as your pick your own 20% off items as well. Fairly sure you get money off even if it's part of a multi-purchase deal as well but I'm not 100% on that. Imagine the range is a bit different depending on where you are in the country though. I'd say it's 50/50 national/local ales here.

Ooh, that's worth knowing, thanks. The lady who served me the other day was promoting Mywaitrose and while I though it sounded worthwhile I also thought it might be one of the many things I never get around to, so this information will serve as a good PROMPT.

It's easy to sign up to IIRC...doing the offers can be a bit of a faff because there's so much to go through but worth it ultimately...plus getting a free coffee whenever you want is no bad thing.

"That culture of independent music that I grew up with has disappeared really," he said. "All those bands that I used to see when I went to school, it's really hard to exist like that now.

...if you can make pickled onions in your garage, rather than be a garage band, you're in business, and there's a market for interesting artisan foods. The spirit of independence has been transferred to food."

Mr James, who launched the Big Feastival celebration of food and music with Jamie Oliver, is now "an ambassador" for Lidl's new 48-strong craft beer range.

Out of interest, what are people's favourite nationwide bottled ales? I often steer clear of some of the usual suspects but that means I might not be sampling a real go-to option. Or even breweries that are fairly reliable. I'm quite aware of many Northern/Yorkshire breweries but I'm less confident when it comes to buying stuff from further afield.

Always enjoyed some of the Badger ales, apart from I think it's called Blandford Fly which has strong taste of cinnamon. Timothy Taylor ales are usually good as well.

You're supposed to pour the last wee dreggsy bit of the bottle with the settled yeast into the smaller glass. Then you can add back in it to taste, like seasoning.

Rather dangerously there's a pub on the platform at Harrogate station now and it's really good too so I'm guilty of having a swift pint or half if I'm waiting for a train. 10 cask offerings, 5 or 6 crafts and a few ciders and a handful of lagers/pilsners. Not badly priced either. Just paid 2.90 which is good for the area.

Gonna pick up a few bottles in Waitrose later on as well if there are any suggestions? Good shouts Mark, I'm a fan of both, only tend to come across Landlord in bottles from TT. Surprising considering Boltmaker won the awards a couple of years ago.

Agree with this, it's horrible. Most prefer Golden Glory I think but Champion is my fave Badger ale

That sounds great. Can't remember the last time I paid under £3 a pint, unheard of down here!

I don't know whether you can go too far wrong with Waitrose's beer selection. Some good breweries within their range - I like Oakham, St Peter's, Bath, Hogs Back, Innis & Gunn, Meantime among others. Quite fond of the likes of Pride, Doom Bar and Tribute as national staples, but their ubiquity means I don't tend to go for them that much.

Re Badger, I think I'd place Poacher's Choice up alongside the golden ales as being a favourite. I can imagine that one being rather divisive though - perhaps not quite to the extent of Blandford Flyer, but perhaps not too far off

Agree. Re. Blandford Flyer. Champion probably my favourite too.

Didn't end up going into Waitrose today but will do tomorrow. Gonna give a mix a go...haven't sampled any of the Bath/St Peter's ales I don't think.

EDIT: Actually that's bollocks...it's Poacher's Choice I don't like. Not had Blandford Flyer.

Finished my huge box of beer. The only one I didn't like was some lemongrass saison monstrosity. Had a couple of Japanese beers in there which were both great. Also didn't find the wheat beers repulsive as usual and even actually quite liked one which was from Berlin.
