Ooh, that looks very interesting. The last time I went there I had a nice MOULES-FRITES washed down with some VAGUELY INTERESTING FORRIN TIPPLE but back then it was an entirely different BELGIAN establishment called Brouge. Didn't even know it had changed. Am such a rubbish, disconnected SW Londoner

Made a last minute decision to visit the GBBF. Very much enjoyed it. Tuesday is great - less busy and all the beer still available. Tiny Rebel Cwtch is Champion Beer of Britain. Not one of my absolute favourites but a decent choice.

Kensington Olympia is a much better venue than Earls Court.

I was there too! Didn't spot an Alty though :( Agree on both counts - good day to go and Olympia is definitely a better venue. Going tomorrow too - probably my final appearance this year so my plan is to get QUITE WANKERED and return with loads of OLD TOMBOLA TAT. Made a fairly solid start on that front with the acquisition of a couple of beer glasses from festivals of yore today. Actually think, for the first time ever, that I've managed to record all the ales I drank tonight. I reckon that now I've entered my fourth decade I might be getting vaguely competent at life (this is definitely a great yardstick by which to measure it, right)?

I did wonder whether you might be around! We spent a lot of time in the section with the American beers (couple of good ones there - expensive though).

Very impressed by your progress into proper adulthood  hope you've grabbed yourself some decent tat. I managed only a Fullers towel...

Ah, I was mostly over by the stage on Tues. Going to hold you responsible for drinking the American section dry as there were hardly any left by the time I got round to it on Weds! Did have quite a nice one from there though.

Have to say I'm not very familiar with Tiny Rebel (know I've had at least one of their beers before but pretty sure it wasn't the Champion). Couldn't be arsed queuing for that one so will have to seek it out some other time.

Pretty poor return on the tat front, alas :( Just a rather unexciting Youngs towel to add to the collection (wasn't really for lack of trying - just kept losing)

I bought a bottle from the offy last week (Black Sheep Brewery, Velo FYI) which had an expiry date of 29th August!!! Drank it Tuesday and suffered no ill-effects, making this a somewhat underwhelming tale, but I like to think I DICED WITH DEATH

The desire to obviate the risk of drinking something out of date is an excellent excuse to buy insanely strong beers with mega long shelf lives :D

Found some almost out of date Rodenbach in an import shop here the other week. Never heard of it. 3 bottles for a quid though.

From wiki: Flanders reds have a strong fruit flavor similar to the aroma, but more intense. Plum, prune, raisin and raspberry are the most common flavors, followed by orange and some spiciness. All Flanders red ales have an obvious sour or acidic taste, but this characteristic can range from moderate to strong. There is no hop bitterness, but tannins are common. Consequently, Flanders red ales are often described as the most "wine-like" of all beers.

7/10. Would buy the most wine-like of all beers again for that price.

Didn't go in the end. My foot is killing me and I didn't want to walk all the way across town. My companions were fuming. Apologies to all concerned.

Kernel Brewery have closed their tap room which has completely RUINED the Bermondsey Beer Mile. Hysterical reaction among the hipster community of London.

In other news, I have recently discovered Tempest Brewing Company. Absolutely excellent beers. Recommend.

Ah, now, this thread won't be much use to me, as I no longer drink. I'm teetotal now, you see. So all the beer/ale stuff - even cider (or wine, for that matter) - will be of no value at all to me, as I don't touch the stuff. Sorry chaps, hope you have a lovely time in this thread; afraid I'm out.

Ah, the Belgians. A fine people. Rene Magritte. Inspector Clouseau. Thomas Vermaelen. Chocolate. I can find some utility in each of their famous exports.

All except beer, of course, because I no longer take alcohol.

Got a box with 30 beers in none of which I've tried before.

Started with the Celtic Brewery's La Tene. It was a fruity beer which I don't really like but it was quite drinkable. I imagine if you're into beers like that then it'd be a great one.

Next was Windsor Brewery's Conqueror. It is a black pale ale (work that one out). The flavour was nothing special but it was a beer that you could easily drink 4 or 5 of without noticing. Went down really easily.

The last one I had was an oak aged American stout from Dominion. This was disappointing. It was an ok beer but the description made it sound like something I would really enjoy. It lacked any real power in the taste and was in the end a very middling beer.

Some more over the weekend.
