Surprised there isn't one of these in the L1 forum already but as Vale seem to be very much involved I thought it would be nice for the fans of those teams auditioning for a place in L2 to come and share their tinpotness (that is a word) and shitness (that is also a word) with each other.
So who is involved in this story so far.....
Coventry are pretty much down despite the fact that JoeJoeJoeJoe was full of stories of them filling their team with Championship level players leading me to include them in my league winners acca.
The last 3 places are very much up for grabs. There was a bit of optimism from Spirederman following deadline day arrivals at Chesterfield but they have followed that up with a defeat at home against fellow strugglers Oldham today.
Oldham are a strange team this season who seem to want to let everyone pencil them in for relegation before they throw a couple of results together to just keep them on the cusp of safety.
Bury had seemed to be showing something towards their early season form recently with their big earners coming back into the side but then they throw in a defeat against another struggling team in Shrewsbury today.
Talking of Shrewsbury, they are most definitely the in form side of all those around the relegation places having now gone 5 games unbeaten and risen to the dizzy heights of 18th, yet they are still only 4 points clear of the relegation zone. Have they turned a corner or will one bad result send them spiralling again?
Spiralling (this is fucking seamless) is one way to describe Port Vale's plummet down the table. The European adventure soon turned sour with the cold Boslem nights not something the foreign contingent enjoyed and once the continental weather left us, so did performances and more importantly results. The inexperienced Michael Brown has been left to try and recover the mess but replacing 2 key players lost on deadline day with somebody who a L2 side didn't want and a goalkeeper whose experience is all from the Scottish Highlands leagues was never going to be a good idea and that was proven with a heavy home defeat today. The only blessing for Vale is that there is either 1 or 2 game advantages over other teams around them - the only problem is actually getting anything from these games.
Any early season optimism from Swindon fans seemed to evaporate by the end of August and their season never seemed to have got going. A big derby match tomorrow could see them climb 5 points clear of the relegation zone but even if this did happen you wouldn't discount Indian Dan and his mates from returning back towards the relegation zone in the near future.
Gillingham and Northampton are 2 teams who have also replaced managers but as with Vale have not really seen an upturn in fortunates following this, although Gillingham are 3 matches unbeaten following 3 draws.
MK Dons, Wimbledon and Oxford all deserve honourable mentions but their current gap between them and the relegation zone and the fact that none are in terrible form would suggest that they won't play a part in this seasons L1 relegation battle.
All aboard the League 1 relegation bus, next stop League 2!
