We took a 17 point deduction the first year we had to play at Don Valley.
Tony Stewart took over after years of mismanagement and Mark Robins almost got us into the play offs despite the deduction.

I wouldn't say we spent loads as Tony is a very sensible owner regarding finances but he did enough business to get us competitive and a combination of astute managing and the fact that other teams just couldn't cope with playing a DVS gave us a great advantage.
I might be confusing you with Bournemouth to be fair, just had a look at your league finishes and realised you had a few more seasons in L2 than I remember. I just remember being a bit frustrated at the time that we were being left in the dust by sides that had overspent and been mismanaged when we were being ran sustainably. My beef with Rotherham might have been the new stadium. I've since had time to reflect on these previous grievances though and realised that being ran sustainably is of absolutely no use if you're ran as incompetently as we were back then. My initial comment today wasn't intended as a dig, more an observation but one that might not have been accurate.

Evans was very successful for us and a really gracious engaging man when you meet and talk to him.

Of course I thoroughly understand why other teams fans can't stand him but I doubt he cares TBH, very much the same as Neil Warnock.

Why couldn't your manager be at the game BTW?
Tbf although grudgingly there is no deny his success, I still prefer Neil Warnock but that’s probably because he’s got some funny one liners.

He didn’t attend Puzza trophy games his number two took charge. That was specific to McCall he treated them as reserve games. Hughes does attend now and tbf we qualified out of the group last season so he takes them a little more seriously, but still a lot of changes.

His teams have always played like thugs against us, especially that Tranmere team. When one of his players nearly took one of our’s head off with a deliberate elbow. Maybe it’s just because he’s a bit of a dinosaur but always found his teams dirty. But no he’s no Steve Evans, no one’s that bad. Didn’t we beat you last time we played at VP?
From a Tranmere perspective never thought Ronnie’s sides with us were that dirty. Wasn’t at the game where Goodison I think got away with a foul which incensed your fans, but he was a law unto himself.

Played like he was trying to get himself sent off then had his arrest for spot fixing or whatever it was not long after. Must have had a tenner on the red card.

EDIT: Just googled this game and the referee was Darren Drysdale hahaha you couldn’t make it up, he’s been reprimanded for decisions or forced to apologise to us more times than we’ve won when he’s been ref.

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
We were always the side at Carlisle who just patched onto someone for a season due to being near nobody but I do miss the days of Darlington being up here, games at feet jams walking down that cobbled street back alley to the away end always seemed to build about of anticipation for the game.

Orient are realistically Carlisle’s rivals too much history between the sides.

Good news everyone, there are some indications that Mullin injury isn't as bad as first thought.

Should know more in a day or two.

I imagine Parkinson will come out in due course and retract his threats to the child who hurt poor Mullers.

Don't tell me he was making a meal of a challenge. That's not like him.

Well it isn't like him. I can't think of any occasion when he's faked injury or rolled around like he's hurt.

Sat on the floor arms out appealing for a penalty? Yes, everytime anyone looks at him in the box. But not simulating injury. Hes no Ruben Rodrigues, tripping himself up and going down like he's been shot.

That's a good accurate description, I blame the beers at the cricket. He doesn't fake injury.

You are correct instead he's a throw himself to the ground and before he's hit the deck claim a penalty, all in one smooth motion.

Ruben did a bit of that but he's not even close to Mullin in that regard. And he's nowhere near as successful and good at it.

For the record I like Mullin and rare him highly, same as Ruben.

Best two players in the NL last season- glad they have both escaped that league!

I’ll be honest apart from the Clayton Donaldson incident I’ve just never felt much towards Crewe personally either positively or negatively. For me it’s Stoke then Walsall (historically many older Vale fans would even put them right alongside the shit) before we come to your Crewe’s etc.
Crewe's never been an intense rivalry really, for example you think back to games at Wrexham and Shrewsbury alongside Stoke its had huge amounts of trouble whereas you rarely get that with the Crewe game apart from the time they went on the pitch and hit our keeper in the 2-2.

The Walsall rivalry completely died until we took DC off them at which point they "didn't care" but made our game a big rivalry.

Its all about Stoke for us though of course anything else is 10% of that. Kind of enjoy not playing them though as we can hold on to our unbeaten run against them in the past 6-7 meetings!

Mullin is in a league of his own with diving.

The only player in the NL who comes close to him is Dobra, Dobra's actually annoy me more though as his look so pathetic

Dobra's antics in the Notts game at Chesterfield was so embarrassing for anyone watching. It was comical. He wasn't so bad in the playoff final but even then the BT commentators can't help but comment on his behaviour. Clearly a talented player but I wouldn't want to watch that week in week out.

Surely Grimsby’s Rose is up there in the diving stakes

He's actually not like that week in, week out. In fact he's usually getting the shit kicked out of him by big grunty NL defenders. That incident with Scott served to wind up County fans no end, and it was obviously a terrible look the longer it went on, but I would still say Scott shouldn't be shoulder charging him in the numbers when the game isn't even playing. He's certainly a shithouse, but he's our shithouse. At least till January anyway, then I expect he will move on. Far too good for national league

Drysdale was always a character (not sure if still about) remember him being the ref on the last visit to chesterfield (we won 1-0) and he turned it into a circus.

Must only be like that against Notts then. At your place he faked injuries to the face twice when neither time was their any contact to the face. It was a needless and silly shoulder barge but that was due to his fakery earlier in the game and then what he did afterwards was pure cringe. Like he'd been shot..... to the face.

He was up to his antics in the final too. He surely realises that these are televised games so replays will be shown , showing him faking it. Basically cheating. He obviously doesn't care.

Totally agree he's far too good for the National League, performed very well against us scoring twice including that beauty at Wembley. Thankfully he never ended up on the winning side in any of the games. A talented shithouse who shouldn't be with chesterfield in non league.

It's always really interesting to me with football fans where what can only be described as a cheap shot from behind to an unsuspecting player is a ok, or at least brushed over, but the victim making the most of that contact is absolutely unforgiveable behaviour. Dobra is obviously very good at winding opposing fans up, but he's one of those players who love if he's for you, and hate if he's against you. I'd probably hate him too if he played against us

Cheap shot with a shoulder to the back at half time, yellow card right? Sounds fair.

I also find it interesting that you choose to ignore the earlier incident in the game , long before his play dead routine for a ridiculous period of time. The moment you make mention of wasn't the first incident as you should be already fully aware. Lucky to stay on the field IMO. Thankfully Jeff didn't :)

Maybe we should discuss this in the non league section of this website, seems more apt seeing as it involves Dobra, Chesterfield and last season.

Yes, that would be fair. As it was he didn't even get punished for it, so his second half repeated kicking of Dobra off the ball which did receive a yellow, should have been a red. Obviously none of this matters a bit now but it's just context. Jeff King a bigger lunatic than Dobra is every day and twice on Sundays, any big game the geezer is a balls hair away from a red card. Our biggest problem last season was 100% Ross Fitz, that polo handed twat cost us promotion and I don't think I'll ever get over it. That complete miss-hit Rodrigues equalizer that went straight into the ground, bobbled over everyone's head and into the goal is just a football incident, but throwing a ball into your own net 2 minutes away from promotion is a bottling of planet size proportions. Then the penos, don't get me started, completely shat himself, County could still be taking pens now and he wouldn't have got near one.
The last bit, you're probably above stuff like that aren't you really, it's just a discussion.

The reality is, where you follow chesterfield, county or mansfield, ultimately you’re worth you’re weight in gold.

I’d much rather someone follow either county or chesterfield and support their local club whatever their success may be than another mindless soulless individual following a big club from afar. Never change on that front
