Grimsby look like they are putting together a better side than last year. Will be interesting to see how they do.

None of our signings so far have been real statements apart from maybe Lewis Ward but they all seem like grafters which I like. I'm hoping we start to see the best of Randell Williams this year, lads got incredible pace and can break ankles on his day but like all young wingers at this level needs to dial in that consistency. This is his year to shine I hope.

How many did he get. I'm sure I can remember him getting close to 20 a few times for us around 2007. Him and Maynard were amongst the top scorers certainly.

You're right - it was his highest since 06/07 when he scored 25 for Crewe (he scored 14 for us last season).

Some teams have almost completed rebuilding their squads for next season and we haven’t even made a single signing!

We appear to be alright going forward, but and especially since losing Aaron Pierre, we need to concentrate on our defensive area for recruitment unless we have the "we'll score one more than you" method of playing.
Should see a lot of goals around our games this season.

Not sure how true the Hewitt thing is, the person who posted it only has 13 posts so no way of knowing if they are reliable or not. Also not sure how well he did last season, but I seem to recall he was fairly well thought of before.

Regarding ourselves, yeah I'm pleased with our initial signings for sure. Multiple areas of attacking concern addressed across all 3 signings. There is probably the strongest talk I can remember for some time that we're in the midst of a takeover, or that additional investment is coming. This could be a factor here, or as I suspect we're just re-investing the wage budget freed up from releasing Welsh, Collins, Woolford, etc.

Gonna be a competitive league, for sure. You should have got the job done last season. Much tougher this, I reckon.

I still think we will have one of the best teams in the division again next season, although that doesn’t mean much clearly.

Still waiting for that attacking signing to make me think we'll be competing for promotion but delighted with what Wellens is doing. Robinson and Bennett would be good additions. The fans are on board this pre season, hopefully that will translate to a more vocal atmosphere in the stands and we can make The County Ground a tough place to come to again.

Someone on The Fishy reckons Elliot Hewitt has signed for us.

Most of our fans will hammer Hewitt, but they’re wrong basically. Unless you play him at right back, he is admittedly an absolutely awful right back.

In central midfield though he’s a good League Two player. Works hard, quick, tall, covers loads of ground, bit of an all rounder. As long as you play him in central midfield with someone who can cover his weaknesses (not great positionally or at passing), he’s a good player.

Can see why, he’s got it all to be a really good player but can be a bit of a headless chicken. Kevin Nolan saved his career by moving him from right back to central midfield.

Cheers. Sounds like a Hessenthaler/Clifton hybrid which I guess would work well in terms of rotation/cover. Did he ever play CB or on the wing for you? Wiki seems to suggest he can play in both of these roles too, but I'm taking that with a pinch of salt.

He played centre back in the odd emergency and there was some talk that Nolan saw that as a viable position for him long term, but I’m not sure that he’s positionally good enough.

Imagine he could do a job on the wing, but his versatility is both a strength and a curse. His best spell at Notts was easily the few months where he started every game in central midfield and wasn’t constantly shifted around to fill gaps.

There was one version of football manager I played where literally every game I would just start and raid Sweden which had all the top players at knock down prices! Kenedy Bakircioglu was clearly the pinnacle of this, but there were some other top class Swedes you could pick up for 100k and less.

I'm going to have a nibble on Ogbu being League 2's top scorer this season.

Yeah, last I had heard he was back training with the physio and fitness coach at full fitness before pre-season (but after the end of the season) apparently. They reckon he's done really well physically and he's been in a good place mentally throughout the rehabilitation too.

Did either of you used to play the 90s CMs? 96/97 or 97/98 was great as Wigan as they started with Roberto Martinez, Jesus Seba and Isidro Diaz. Carlisle also started with a £1M budget and the likes of Stephane Pounewatchy (once got 50+ assists for me) and David Reeves.

Even if he's played two professional games or he's come from somewhere terrible like Yeovil or Morecambe. No-one ever says what a pointless, underwhelming, League Two waste of space, waste of a click piece of business they have just completed. We've just signed a 36 year old with no knees. He will really bring on the lads who still have knees, totally worth the wage of a full time pro. Should be a good signing.

From a player point of view, my favourite from the NL days was when every player signed by every club had always rejected or had serious interest from the FL.

"Yeah, delighted to be here. I had lots of interest from the Football League but I felt I'd be better served playing my prime football years here in Woking in front of 500 fans."

"We're delighted Jason has chosen to sign for us. He had multiple offers from the FL, at bigger clubs and far bigger wages but he chose to come here, Dover, which is about as close to European football as he's ever going to get".
